Bird Psalm
Severe Northern California atmospheric rivers, the result of climate changes, have recently displaced the lifestyles of many species, including birds. This collection of photographs and cheritas tells the story of nest bits and pieces belonging to robins, blue birds, chickadees, and black birds strewn about my yard.
Each fragment I came upon was, in my eyes, a remnant work of art that represented tireless aviary efforts to carry from somewhere else by beak what was needed to build a home here.
I was beyond grateful to see there were no signs of winged inhabitants, young or old, left behind. This is what makes bird psalm a prayer.
northern storm
of harsh gales
haunts trees
grey fingered squall
shakes nests
loose
maple twigs
and mulberry leaves
scatter
give way -
homeless
again
threads
warbler-picked
still tucked in
bird song
cushioned fledglings
now airborne
feathered
light-bone bodies
skim updrafts of wind
aloft
in formation
hope flocks
So many natural habitats have been altered by manmade environmental shifts. This means that not all birds will continue to build nests in places that have become storm (or drought)-fraught. But I have seen some of them return to the exact same trees they fled from in recent years.
I marvel at their choice to come back and start over. Such instinctive determination and persistence renders me speechless.
May they
be free
from harm
may this be so
in beauty -
in beauty
